SUMMARY: This fourth annual “Writing Workshop & Retreat” is geared for educators, scholars, leaders, and advocates who seek to broaden and strengthen their toolkit for writing and publishing on education in both academic and public venues and in ways that advance justice and movement building. Participants will learn writing strategies from award-winning scholar Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, as well as his tips for writing for the media and journals. Participants will have the option to join a small-group discussion on their short drafts or action plans. When not in sessions, participants will have ample time to sit in picturesque settings to write.
VIRTUAL OPTION: Can’t join in-person? We have added the option of joining virtually and in real time! This entails online and live access (via Zoom) to all formal sessions, namely, the instructional and meditation sessions with Kevin and the workshopping session in small groups. When not in sessions, you are encouraged to write write write! These sessions will not be recorded, so please be sure to adjust for your time zone—the schedule below is in Pacific (California) Time.
COVID AND WILDFIRE PROTOCOLS: All onsite participants must provide evidence of being fully vaccinated prior to arrival. Wearing masks will be required indoors and recommended outdoors. Any participant who tests positive for, develops symptoms of, or suspects infection by COVID-19 within 14 days prior to the retreat must cancel registration and will be fully refunded. If the Workshop organizer or the retreat center cancels the Workshop because of the pandemic, all participants will be fully refunded. Additionally, the Workshop is scheduled to occur after the typical end of the wildfire season; nonetheless, a risk remains, and if the Workshop organizer or the retreat center cancels the Workshop because of wildfire damage or risk or unhealthy air (e.g., smoke from fires), all participants will be fully refunded.

LOCATION: The venue is a beautiful retreat center with a mission of justice that aligns with the Workshop, located in a secluded area surrounded by hundreds of acres of private hills, creeks, trees, and lawns about two hours north by car of San Francisco. The center has ample indoor and outdoors areas to write, including well-ventilated meeting, dining, and common spaces, as well as hiking and jogging trails. Free parking onsite. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property; cell-phone reception is limited. Information about the retreat center, including tips for packing, will be provided upon registration. Certain items are strictly prohibited, including use or possession of recreational drugs, alcohol, and tobacco; pets; open flames; and weapons. If a service animal is required, please contact the Workshop organizer. All participants must sign agreements and liability release forms for the retreat center.
TRANSPORTATION: Registrants are responsible for their own transportation. The Workshop organizer may be able to help to arrange carpooling from the San Francisco Bay Area (including SF and Oakland Airports) as a courtesy and without bearing liability or expense. Tips for travel, including carpooling, will be provided upon registration.
LODGING OPTIONS: Beautiful, comfortable, well-ventilated and heated single- and double-occupancy rooms are available onsite, all with shared bathrooms. Bedding, towels, and basic toiletries are provided. Bathrooms are for multiple-person use (i.e., private shower and toilet stalls in large shared bathrooms, separated by gender, like in a spa). Preferred roommates for double-occupancy rooms may be identified in the “Additional Information” box of the Registration Form; otherwise, roommates of the same gender will be assigned. Lodging is limited, especially for single-occupancy rooms, and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Courtesy in Rooming: For those who snore or in other ways can be disruptive to a roommate, please select the single-occupancy lodging. :)
Additional Option: Half an hour away are several towns with high-end hotels, for those attending in-person who wish to arrange their own lodging offsite. For this option, you may select the “No Lodging” registration rate, and you are responsible for your own lodging and transportation. Lunches and dinners are included in the “No Lodging” registration.
REGISTRATION OPTIONS: Registration includes access to all sessions. The “Registration for Online Participation” is for those attending virtually, and includes online real-time access to sessions but no lodging or meals. The remaining registration options are for those attending in-person, with three lodging options: “No Lodging” for those who attend in-person but lodge off-side (lunches and dinners are included); Single and Double Occupancy Rooms for those who lodge onsite (all meals indicated on the schedule above are included). The Discounted Registration rate entails the same workshop experience but at a lower cost, and may be selected by anyone with limited financial resources.
REGISTRATION FORM: As noted above, the “Additional Information” box on the Registration Form may be used to identify such items as:
Preferred Roommate: If you register for a double-occupancy room, you may identify the name of your preferred roommate, or if you do not have a preferred roommate, please specify your gender.
Dietary Restrictions: All meals will be healthy vegan meals (and FYI, Kevin recently led a retreat here with this meal plan and everyone, including the non-vegans, raved about the meals!). If you have other dietary restrictions, please specify, and we will do our best to accommodate.
Accessibility or Mobility Restrictions: Please specify if you have needs regarding accessibility or mobility, and we will do our best to accommodate.
Multiple Registrations: If you are registering for more than one person, please list the name, job title, institutional affiliation, email address, mobile phone number, and dietary/accessibility needs of the additional registrant(s).
PAYMENTS: All registration payments must be submitted via the Form below at the time of registration, and are non-refundable. Participants may choose to attend only a portion of the workshop, which does not change the registration fees.
LEGAL AGREEMENTS: By registering, you are agreeing to hold Kevin Kumashiro Consulting harmless regarding liability, and also to affirm the indemnity of Kevin Kumashiro Consulting regarding intellectual property.
