Mentoring Workshop for Queer Scholar-Educator-Activists
16-18 February 2019
Oakland, CA
SUMMARY: This 3-day workshop will cover a range of topics on what it means to flourish in higher education as queer/lesbian/gay/bisexual/trans/intersex scholars who are committed to anti-oppressive education, including such topics as: navigating the academy; frameworks for anti-oppressive education; the politics of queerness and intersectionality in colleges of education; publishing and teaching; and caring for self and community. Facilitated by Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, this workshop is geared for graduate students and newer faculty, staff, and administrators in schools of education, although QLGBTIs in all career stages and in varying settings are welcome. Please note that this workshop is intended for individuals who identify as queer/LGBTI, and we ask our allies to respect this closed space.

VENUE LOCATION, ACCESSIBILITY, AND PARKING: To make this workshop intimate and affordable, we are convening in a spacious and charming meeting room in a residential neighborhood just north of Oakland. Wifi is available; no stairs are required. The venue is 14 miles from the Oakland Airport, and 23 miles from the San Francisco Airport, and can be reached easily by public transportation (BART and then a free bus that drops you off a block away). If you drive, ample free garage parking is available, as is free street parking. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the venue.
WHAT TO BRING: The workshop will be as “green” as possible, so no handouts should be expected. Participants should bring a laptop or writing supplies to take notes during the sessions. Valuables should be left at home, and the organizer and property owner are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property.
LODGING: Participants will need to arrange their own lodging. Several nice hotels are within a mile (10-20 minute walk) from the workshop venue, and are currently listed on travel websites at less than $150/night (search for hotels in Emeryville, and choose from the group of hotels near the intersection of Powell and Shellmound).
REGISTRATION AND MEALS: Registration includes access to all sessions, as well as 1 dinner, 1 lunch, and light snacks. Below are two options for registration on a sliding scale. The Discounted Registration rate entails the same workshop experience but at a lower cost, and may be selected by anyone with limited financial resources. Please note that the registration form includes a space to indicate dietary restrictions.
PAYMENTS: All payments must be submitted at the time of registration, and are non-refundable. Participants may arrive late or leave early, which does not change the registration fees.
LEGAL AGREEMENTS: By registering, you are agreeing to hold Kevin Kumashiro Consulting harmless regarding liability, and also to affirm the indemnity of Kevin Kumashiro Consulting regarding intellectual property.
